How did you like the heat wave earlier this week? Although the weather has cooled a little bit, here’s a flashback from Schoolhouse Rock, starting with some cool figure-8 skating on a sheet of ice.
0 → 8 → ∞
And just like last week’s fun with Number 9, They Might Be Giants sound off with another twist on the Number 8 (a twisted zero, actually), once again including music that’s a little bit more lively!
Walkathon is nine weeks away! Our COUNTdown continues … Are you getting ready?
The classic Schoolhouse Rock mathematics series called it “Naughty Number Nine,” playing off some obvious alliteration … and recalling the fun that 9 has with its multiplication rules. Do you know the #9 Math Rule?
Bonus Fact: Our famous “23” – featured prominently in our logo, since the 23rd Anniversary Walkathon is on October 23 – is the ninthPrime Number!
They Might Be Giants
For something a little more upbeat (but no less naughty), the modern rockers They Might Be Giants have a few stories to tell about the Pirate Girls Nine … and scroll down for a song about the upper-grade topic of geometry!
Anybody know what a 23-sided-agon is called? … Your answer welcome in the comments section below.

They Might be Giants, by the way, are performing in the Bay Area this weekend, including a Free Show on Sunday in San Francisco. Maybe they’ll play a song from their recent album “Here Come The 1-2-3s.”
Our 2010 “P0WER iN NUM3ER5″ T-shirts debuted today, worn by Booksin Teachers & Staff and many of our volunteer Walkathon Leaders.
This year’s shirt is again designed by volunteer parent Phil Mowery of Tread Creative. The logo design embodies our Power in Numbers theme– literally – by blending relevant numbers and mathematical symbols into a superhero of numbers, capable of anything.
Just like our Booksin Students, these numbers come together to form something that is larger than the sum of its parts!
Want Your Own? … Don’t worry, you can have one.
All students who raise $15 or more will get a free t-shirt when they arrive at Booksin on Walkathon Day.
Siblings, “Junior Walkers,” and Booksin Alumni can walk to earn prizes and get a t-shirt by purchasing their Lap Card, or soliciting pledges on their own.
Individual shirts will be available for advance purchase in September (and on Walkathon Day, while supplies last).
Want to Get Your Name on the Shirt? … We welcome Sponsors!
Donate $500 to have a business logo displayed as a Sponsor.
Our Walkathon Leadership Committee members also wear shirts between now and Walkathon. You can get one of those by volunteering to lead one of our Teams!
School starts on Monday, and Walkathon is just ten weeks away. For our brand new Booksin Kindergartners, we’ve got a special treat from They Might Be Giants, a podcast about counting to Ten the Mississippi Way! ;-0
